Majority takes back seat in BN's 'fixed deposit'

Majority takes back seat in BN's 'fixed deposit'

KUCHING, Apr 16: In Sarawak, any win for PAS is a good win, and judging by the state's decades-long status as Barisan Nasional's 'fixed deposit' which enabled the coalition to form the Federal government every general election, that is quite a realistic expectation to arrive at.

It was made by Abang Ahmad Kerdee, PAS's candidate in Beting Maro, said to be a seat where PAS has a fighting chance to deliver the Islamic party its first ever election victory in the Land of the Hornbill.

Abang Ahmad said majority was not an issue, and what was more important was that the clamour for change had inundated Sarawak's political landscape.

In Beting Maro, Abang Ahmad has only one hope.

“We don’t care about the majority, as long as we win," told Harakahdaily, adding that he was optimistic of that long-awaited victory for PAS when the final results are announced tonight.

“So far, Alhamdullihah (praise to God), it has been very positive, the 'peace' symbol which we introduced here has got us many followers. To the extent that our visits to long houses were greeted by shouts of 'Hidup Bulan' (Long live the Moon),” Abang Ahmad continued with an air of confidence.

For PAS's Youth leader Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, who was with Abang Ahmad, PAS will do much better than the 2006 state election.

“This time around, we sense a different mood among the people. The last time we came here, we were welcomed by parang (machete), now there is no place that we can’t go in,” said Nasrudin.

Nasrudin also expressed confidence that the younger generation of voters were with Pakatan Rakyat this time.
